Subgroups of Finite Index in Profinite Groups
One way to view Theorem 1.1 is as a statement that the algebraic structure of a finitely generated profinite group somehow also encodes the topological structure. That is, if one wishes to know the open subgroups of a profinite group G, a topological property, one must only consider the subgroups of G of finite index, an algebraic property. As profinite groups are compact topological spaces, an...
متن کاملFinite Index Subgroups of Conjugacy Separable Groups
We construct an example of conjugacy separable group possessing a not conjugacy separable subgroup of finite index. We give also a sufficient condition for a conjugacy separable group to preserve this property when passing to subgroups of finite index. We establish also conjugacy separability of finitely presented residually free groups using impressive results of Bridson and Wilton [BW-07].
متن کاملFinite index subgroups of mapping class groups
Let g ≥ 3 and n ≥ 0, and let Mg,n be the mapping class group of a surface of genus g with n boundary components. We prove that Mg,n contains a unique subgroup of index 2g−1(2g − 1) up to conjugation, a unique subgroup of index 2g−1(2g + 1) up to conjugation, and the other proper subgroups ofMg,n are of index greater than 2g−1(2g+1). In particular, the minimum index for a proper subgroup of Mg,n...
متن کاملAbelian Rank of Normal Torsion-free Finite Index Subgroups of Polyhedral Groups
Suppose that P is a convex polyhedron in the hyperbolic 3-space with finite volume and P has integer ( > 1) submultiples of it as dihedral angles. We prove that if the rank of the abelianization of a normal torsion-free finite index subgroup of the polyhedral group G associated to P is one, then P has exactly one ideal vertex of type (2,2,2,2) and G has an index two subgroup which does not cont...
متن کاملOn the Subgroups of Finite Abelian Groups of Rank Three
We describe the subgroups of the group Zm × Zn × Zr and derive a simple formula for the total number s(m,n, r) of the subgroups, where m,n, r are arbitrary positive integers. An asymptotic formula for the function n 7→ s(n, n, n) is also deduced.
